Taking inspiration from detective films of the ’70s, “WOP” is an atmospheric new single from Gianfranco Malorgio, an artist based in Rome, Italy. Tracing his musical beginnings to playing classical guitar as a young boy, Malorgio went on to co-found the project Hot Club Roma, blending Gypsy jazz with Django Reinhardt’s legacy. He has performed internationally, collaborated on award-winning soundtracks, and organized acclaimed jazz festivals. “WOP” is his success, showcasing his stellar guitar work alongside a delightfully haunting production.
Nocturnal synths and sporadic rhythmic thumps assemble an immediate atmospheric intrigue. A twangy guitar-set suaveness takes hold thereafter, traversing seamlessly into moody piano adornments. The melding of spacey synths, twangy guitars, and solemn keys crafts a soundscape fit for nighttime walks, leading into more expressive guitar sequences across the second half that inject a sense of vibrancy. Still, “WOP” maintains a delectably eerie composure throughout, developing with climactic fervency in its chilly aesthetical pursuits.
Per Malorgio, the track “was composed with a possible film adaptation in mind and is part of a compositional idea inspired by the detective films of the 70s.” He continues: “In the latter I began my activity as a composer, working on some songs designed mainly for synchronization, therefore suitable for listening to films, soundtracks, etc.”
