Eternal Mourning – ‘A Draft’

Showcasing a memorable rock intrigue, A Draft is the new album from Eternal Mourning, the project of Montreal-based singer/songwriter Philippe Mourani. Also a bassist in various bands, Mourani thoroughly impresses with a sound steeped in nocturnal rock spells and emotive haunts.

Opening the album, “I’m a Draft” crafts a hypnotic rock captivation — lamenting on a feeling of being left behind, and capturing how one may feel like a work-in-progress. “Toxic Lovers” follows with an eerily compelling vocal drive, lingering enjoyably between ghostly escalations and contemplative, debonair immersion. The project’s tendency for atmospheric, moody rock swells shows strongly on this opening one-two punch.

Continuing the engaging sound, “Cyber Cowboys” is especially enveloping in its haunting vocal spaciousness — combining with murky guitars that invoke a post-punk revivalist flair, with shades of early Interpol. Album finale “Expand My Mind” is equally compelling in its foreboding descriptions — “no one’s around,” — into organ-laden infusions. A Draft is a gripping album from Eternal Mourning, full of emotion and atmosphere.
