Collectors Item – “Sweetness”

/

“Sweetness” is a gorgeously unfolding track from Collectors Item, a Brooklyn-based project led by Michael Matsakis. A hypnotic melding of piano, clanky guitars, and steady yet slight percussion emerge — building into a warmly reassuring vocal tone past the two-minute turn. Crawling bass-y intrigue and introspective vocal lushness — “sink into the bottom of what I don’t deserve,” — thoroughly engross. The final minute is especially enveloping, infusing chiming textural haunts for a slowcore-forward captivation.

“This song depicts the things in life that are so sweet they make me want to cry as well as the mystery of why sweet things make me cry,” Matsakis says. “Is it because I don’t feel deserving of real sweetness on the Earth? Just like all the other tracks on the album, they were all performed, engineered, mixed and mastered independently by me.”

“Sweetness” comes via Collectors Item’s excellent new full-length, Peaceful in the Absence, streaming below:

This and other tracks featured this month can be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Emerging Singles’ Spotify playlist.
