Succeeding with a range of sharp songwriting, from the funky pop title track to a lush folk finale, Bones is a riveting new EP from Catlea. The Cincinnati-based artist impresses with a consistently melodic and heart-on-sleeve captivation throughout.
The EP’s title track opens with enjoyable intrigue, admitting “I didn’t get over you… just got over talking about it.” Plucky guitars and throbbing bass move into jangly suaveness, intensifying into the funky central hook; a more prominent rhythmic propulsion takes hold there, alongside the initial lyrical admission. “I’m a little hollow, or a little more full inside my soul,” the vocals capture a sort of in-between, asking “where do I go from here?” with enjoyable introspection. It’s a stellar opener to an EP that impresses in its melodic delivery.
Another highlight, “Lying” ascends with a spirited acknowledgement of a relationship’s demise. “I wish I was lying to you, about cheating on you, with my best friend,” the vocals let out alongside swipes of guitars. “If I’m honest with you, I could be happier,” continues that envelopment, with no shortage of climactic charisma. From these success to the finale “Like Me,” which charms with a more folk-forward sweetness, Bones is a stirring success from Catlea.
