WØLZT – ‘Tapes from the Maze’

Revealing a gripping instrumental sound spanning from meditative rock to night-friendly synth pursuits, Tapes from the Maze is an impactful new album from WØLZT, a solo artist based in the French Alps. Steadily unfolding structures and a keen sense of atmosphere combine on this standout release, showcasing the artist’s very capable songwriting and production.

Opening track “Noise” expands from the lonesome sound of wind, into a chilly buzzing that becomes enjoyably accompanied by twangy guitar tones and steady bass pulses. A dexterous, jangly quality immerses past the four-minute turn — progressing into a second half that impresses in its dynamic tonal range; thumping rhythmic intrigue projects a spacious intrigue, while brighter guitars and synths exude a triumphant effervescence into a satiating, rock-forward close. “Noise” is a stellar kick-off to this memorable album from WØLZT.

The other two tracks prove equally impressive. “Driving Out” unveils a more nocturnal soundscape, with storm-like ambience and glimmering textures assembling into percussive pit-pattering. A darkly enveloping synth/bass tone permeates thereafter alongside the hypnotic rhythms, further embracing the electronic realm in the spacey synth flourishes. “Noise” excels with its rock intertwining, while “Driving Out” succeeds in its electronic-forward soundscape. Finale “Signal” stirs in sitting somewhere in-between, succeeding in both haunting spaciousness and bellowing, brass-y lingering into guitar-friendly movement. Tapes from the Maze is ravishing throughout.
