Ugly Ghost – “The Surface”

//

A dreamy rock and bedroom-pop intertwining shines on “The Surface,” a beautifully evolving track from Ugly Ghost. The project represents the work of multi-instrumentalist and producer Jake Perreault, based in Providence, RI. Perreault describes the single as navigating “the emotional landscape of feeling misunderstood and unaccepted in a relationship shaped & strained by religious expectation.”

“You don’t know the shape of my soul,” the ardent, soulful vocals let out during the gripping chorus, complemented by serene synth pulses; it’s amongst a number of riveting structural moments, ranging from more lush pop envelops like that, to soaring guitar-led emotion at mid-point — invoking an ’80s rock nostalgia, fit for nighttime strolls. “The Surface” is a gripping, replay-inducing success from Ugly Ghost.

This and other tracks featured this month can be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Emerging Singles’ Spotify playlist.
