Nashville-based project Retrosaint compels with a flourishing structural build on new single “False Start,” building from crisp guitar-led admissions into chamber-pop entrancement; lovely string arrangements enjoyably bolster the affecting vocal work. Retrosaint’s rock infusions also shine, attaining anthemic heights as the track progresses. The project is led by singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist David Ross
Ross says of the track: “Sometimes good relationships come to an end, for whatever reason. And sometimes, we think we’ve reached some big milestone in life when in fact, the journey hasn’t even started yet. That’s what “False Start” is about.”
“What could I say, I was afraid to show you my heart,” the opening lyrics admit, combining with mellow guitar twangs and a climactic acoustic drive into a lovely, hooky flourishing. The title-touting references arise into an optimistic “put it back together again,” reflective of prevailing through tumult and potentially even coming out stronger than before. Strings enter beautifully as the two-minute mark approaches; the vocals excel particularly within the “lying on the ground,” soaring, traversing into bursting guitar momentum thereafter.
The second half is declarative of no longer “sitting on the fence,” exhilarating in a sense of newfound personal confidence as an anthemic, rock-forward production takes invigorating hold. The gorgeous strings enter again as the track reaches its conclusion, cementing its success as a production that masterfully blends chamber-pop and rock charms.
