The second of two singles out this year from Stockholm-based artist Orlando Hotopf, “Half Light” resonates in its late-night, subdued pop appeal — emitting a gripping emotiveness within the lush production. Hotopf describes the release as “about processing the reality of supporting someone who is not well. It’s my way of saying that I will always be there, will stay strong and will guide them home even when the road feels long and the ending is barely visible.”
The production from Tyler Neil excels, particularly in its serenely developing tones and backing vocal work, featuring Archie Faulks and Freja Drakenberg. “Half Light” enamors in its chilly assortment of glimmering piano, steady percussion, and backing vocal adornments.
Atmospherically conjuring a sunset-laden sky in its “getting late,” ruminations and guiding light referencing, “Half Light” compels in its mellow piano-forward hypnotics and pulsing, sporadic rhythms. The “I’ll be there waiting,” reassurances glide seamlessly into the “no hope in your heart,” hook; soulful dual-vocal layering and ensuing synth arp effervescence provide a riveting backing soundscape. “Half Light” is an emotive, introspective pop success from Orlando Hotopf.
