Marsupial Lion – “Cartoon World”

//

A riveting blend of electro-pop catchiness and moody rock vigor, “Cartoon World” is a single out today from Marsupial Lion, the project of Los Angeles-based artist Travis Jonathan. “Welcome to our cartoon world,” his vocals declare amidst effervescent synth gliding and a steady bass pulse. A poignant commentary touches on the world’s absurdities — from false saviors to a willingness to be dumbed-down.

“Everything’s cool when you’re dumbed down and doomed,” Jonathan sings, capturing the impact of ignorant bliss on societal evolution into a “cartoon world.” Electrifying doses of guitar pair cohesively with the illuminated synths, enjoyably combining pop modernity with past inspirations like Tears for Fears and Cocteau Twins. “Cartoon World” has us firmly anticipating Marsupial Lion’s upcoming sophomore album, preceded by multiple singles into 2025.

This and other tracks featured this month can be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Emerging Singles’ Spotify playlist.
