Legends of the Seven Golden Vampires – ‘Psychedelic Soul & Trash Vol.3’

A delightful Halloween release from Legends of the Seven Golden Vampires, Psychedelic Soul & Trash Vol.3 conjures a creatively dynamic realm of rock and pop — with an unmistakable sci-fi/horror thematic inspiration. The inspirations are diverse, described by guitarist/bassist/keyboardist Nick Foster as spanning “from Garage Rock, Psychedelia, Soul, Funk, and even a little vocal tribute to the genius that is William Shatner.”

The album’s eclectic array is evident from the get-go — opening track “Cosmic Discotheque” struts a glam-friendly rock charisma, traversing into the funky rock haze of “Close To You,” particularly chilling upon the second-half string infusions, which invoke a sort of horror-movie foreboding. “Something Wicked This Way Comes” furthers the funk-pop haunting, melding brassy snippets with a ghostly vocal introduction and suave lead.

“Autumn Fall” is among the many highlights as well. The booming bass and simmering orchestral complement to the throwback vocal charms is akin to a lost Spector cut, impressing with its dreamy rhythmic pulse and vocal mystique. The second half consumes as well, from the funky spoken-word rumblings of “A Long Walk Home” to “Season of the Witch,” thoroughly cinematic in its infusions of strings. Psychedelic Soul & Trash Vol.3 is an apt treat on this day of ghouls.

“Autumn Fall” and other tracks featured this month can be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Emerging Singles’ Spotify playlist.
