Kylee Phillips – ‘the good parts’ EP

Michigan-based artist Kylee Phillips shows a stirring sound across her new EP, the good parts, released today. Last year’s Long Time Coming EP drew ample praise for the artist, building a strong following in the Midwest especially, and the good parts continues that success with immersive songwriting — touting introspective lyricism and a pleasing blend of rock, pop, and folk. Producer Evan Eliason returns with their crisply emotive production here as well, after working on Long Time Coming as well.

“You can try to fight the tide, you can learn to watch it rise,” Phillips sings on the compelling opener “head down/eyes up,” a dynamic EP kick-off in its range between piano-set contemplation and ardent expansion — particularly in the final segment with clanging percussion, buzz-y bass, and anthemic backing vocals.

The EP’s title track is another standout, emphasizing to “keep the good parts,” alongside dreamy guitar tones and reminiscing of “that time we drove down the Michigan coast.” From these success to the touching, string-laden finale “beautiful still,” the good parts is a consistently enjoyable EP from Kylee Phillips.
