Out today, Belief Systems is a fantastic rock full-length from Charleston-based band Infinitefreefall. Last year’s album Catastrophe Magnet marked the band’s foray into a more rock-forward invigoration, following a series of electronic Eps throughout the late 2010s. The newly released Belief Systems continues that stylistic push with even more eclectic charm.
Post-punk, kraut-rock, shoegaze, and psychedelic elements converge seamlessly within the production, emphasizing both atmosphere and melodic satiation. The album is a stirring success from Infinitefreefall, which comprises Maxton Stenstrom on guitar and vocals, Loren Jolley on synth and vocals, Bradley “Bayou” Simmons on bass, and Shawn Krauss on drums. Belief Systems is continues the gripping sound showcased on previously released album singles, “Desecrated Landscape” and “You Ask a Lot of Questions.”
Multiple highlights are abound. Opening track “Come Out You’re Surrounded” compels with its sense of unease — lyrically referencing a burning building, and “running as fast as I can,” — as whirring guitars and steady rhythms craft a post-punk yearning. Soaring vocal affections past the two-minute turn swell for a memorable impact. “Seismic Activity” is another standout, embracing jangly guitars and emotively expanding vocals — yearning for a “quiet place,” in the midst of tumult, and into the blissfully wordless vocal hook. Then there’s the stellar title track, which spans from dreamy introspection to anthemic guitar elongation. Belief Systems is a resonating success from Infinitefreefall.
