A recently released EP from Los Angeles-based artist BEN SCOTT, Wilting Flowers successfully explores heartbreak and moving on. A dynamic range of styles, from the folk-forward lushness of “Home, Alone” to the anthemic rock spirit of “Angela,” makes for a consistently engaging listening experience.
The EP’s opening title track enamors in its jangly guitars and soul-searching lyrical drive, admitting “now I see where I’m supposed to be,” following personal introspection. “I played the game,” a spirited turn reveals, alongside laments of losing one’s way. “Wilting Flowers” kicks off the EP in fantastic form, emitting a jangle-pop charm amidst relatable lyricism on feelings of being emotively lost — though striving to break free of that haze.
The three ensuing tracks also impress. The heartfelt folk ballad “Home, Alone” ruminates on past memories and an enduring yearning — “I’ll still be thinking of you,” — within gorgeous acoustics and twangy guitars. The concluding track “Angela” also stirs in its more impassioned alt-rock form, letting “I think we’re through,” and showing a melancholic sense of regret amidst a hooky rock production. Wilting Flowers is an EP that consumes in its emotively gripping and approachably melodic songwriting.
