Sailors is an impactful new EP from Antoine Guigan, an artist based in Rezé, France. The atmospheric and thematic tones resonate in depictions of sailors adrift, in a metaphorical sea of the human experience — detailing love, loss, resilience, and the impact of grief.
Solemn vocals and chirpy brass adornments lead a chilling sound on the opening “Casey is Sad.” The lyrics depict a character grappling with sadness and loss, traversing from pub to home with a resonating emission of loneliness: “Poor Casey knows that he’ll die alone on this dirty couch.” Resilience in the face of despair lingers throughout. Standout track “Sailors” melds twinkling piano and warming bass within lyrical sentiments of alienation, letting out: “We might as well be sailors, we might as well live on the sea,” — effectively echoing a yearning for connection amidst a world that feels broken and hostile.
EP finale “The Crone” is especially heartfelt, weaving organs and shuffling percussion with atmospheric impact. “Bittersweet memories I cannot forget,” the vocals let out, lamenting a sense of feeling stranded by grief and the passage of time. References to passing waves and “a sailor’s grave,” further a foreboding passage of time, where beauty fades alongside the years facing a realization: “I’m just the crone on the shore and people pass me by.” The Sailors EP is a resonating success, stirring in its portrayals of life’s obstacles and ensuing perseverance.
