The I Think It’s Funny EP is a memorable new release from Ubiquity Machine, a Washington D.C.-based duo comprising The Rabbit and Howard Rabach. The EP’s title track serves as a preview of their upcoming album, releasing gradually throughout the year.
The opening title track emits a soulful intrigue from the get-go. A grooving bass line and hazy glimpses of organs complement a debonair vocal presence, as The Rabbit’s vocals arise from suaveness into an escalated “trying to keep us down,” hookiness at the chorus’ conclusion. “‘I Think It’s Funny’ is about trying to find freedom when everyone and their cat wants you to conform,” Rabach explains, calling it “a working class story wrapped in a catchy tune.” There’s an invigoration quality apparent in the bluesy guitar tones and acknowledgement of being kept “down,” though taking pride in a perseverance to break through.
The EP’s other two tracks continue the engaging songwriting. “Don’t you think that I’m losing mine?” the vocals inquire on the subsequent “Losing Your Mind,” also dazzling in its bass-heavy funkiness within the verses and radiant catchiness in the chorus. Lounge-friendly piano tones also impress during the mid-point. The EP concludes with the excellent “Betty and Steve,” featured previously here. The EP is a melodic, confident delight from Ubiquity Machine.
