Trench Coast – ‘Mix Drinks’ EP

/

Berlin-based project Trench Coast caught our ears last year with the debut album Drinks, touting an array of melodic atmospherics in its gentle bass lines, trickling guitars, and heady synths. We’re delighted to hear that Trench Coast has recently put out a new EP, entitled Mix Drinks, with new twists on tracks from their debut album. A more electronic-embracing sound, with hypnotic yet thumping rhythms, enthralls throughout.

The EP’s five re-arrangements include works from the artists Ansek, Axl Rhodes, grässlichrosaleuchten, and qrauer — in addition to Trench Coast’s own “Celebrity Mix” of “Boris Bay.” The opening “Packs” is a riveting success from qrauer, aka Dresden-based musician and interdisciplinary artist Christian Grochau. Spacey, throbbing synths and ghostly vocal snippets intertwine with dreamy intrigue, escalating in the synths’ buzzing and rhythmic momentum as the gripping structure progresses; it’s a fantastic opener to an EP full of electronic satiation.

The highlights continue thereafter. Ansek’s remix of “Vallies” is delectably eerie — moving from aquatic synth arpeggiation into foreboding dark-space haunts in its tonal navigation. Elsewhere, Axl Rhodes’ “Slushwave Edit” of “The Human Megybyte” continues those compelling vibes, building gradually into late-night bass gyrations amidst shimmering synth mystery. Crashing rhythmic effects invigorate in the second half, settling into a vague remembrance into the track’s conclusion. Mix Drinks is a consuming EP from Trench Coast, providing an excellent accompaniment to last year’s debut album.

This and other tracks can be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Emerging Electronic’ Spotify playlist.
