Two recent singles from Los Angeles-based artist Sahara Grim showcase an atmospheric serenity within heady thematic pursuits, taking inspiration from classic folklores and fantasy stories — within timeless retellings of friendships gone awry and the presence of darkness.
Released last month, “The Red Shoes” begins with an eerie sense of spaciousness, shifting quickly into lush acoustics and soulful vocals. Hints of bossa-nova and lounge-set immersion build into twinkling keys that adorn a perkier vocal presence, then accompanied by glistening synths that bolster the momentum further. Sahara Grim describes the effort as “a rather happy sounding song that speaks to darkness, draws inspiration from the classic folkloric tale passed down through many generations and how these stories old as time parallel themes in our modern lives.”
Another success, released today, “Looking Glass” features the artists Nailah Hunter and Lionmilk, in addition to production from Luke Temple, aka Art Feynman. Taking inspiration from fantasy stories like Snow White and Alice in Wonderland, the track is described by Sahara Grim as “written in response to friendships gone wrong and ultimately having to let go of them, as well as the past.” She continues: “Looking Glass is symbolic of how we are all reflections of each other and how we can determine which mirrors we look into.”
