“What Passed Me By This Night” is a moody, nocturnal rock success from Iceland-based artist R.M. Hendrix. Thematically capturing a will to survive, amidst foreboding threats at the midnight hour, pairs with an atmospheric rock sound that takes inspiration from cited acts like R.E.M. and The Smiths, in addition to the novels of Cormac McCarthy. “I’ve survived a tornado. I’ve survived a car crash. These moments remind me of how fragile and beautiful life is,” Hendrix says. “In the daily routine it’s easy to lose sight of this truth. But I know how lucky I am.”

The track opens with a solemn reference to the title, melding chillingly with lonesome guitar twangs and a vocal tone exuding wintry introspection; the track was written over the winter, and it feels as such in the darkly affecting lyricism — “chilled my bones.” Further references to chances to “make things right,” further the intrigue, as the guitar work escalates into a beautiful piano-touched bridge. “What passed me by,” Hendrix lets out thereafter as the guitars creep back in, leading to a riveting, emotive final minute. “What Passed Me By This Night” is an emotively gripping showcase in quality songwriting from R.M. Hendrix.

This and other tracks featured this month can be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Emerging Singles’ Spotify playlist.
