The duo Moon and Aries craft a soulful electro-pop appeal throughout their new album TRANSCENDENCE, comprising 12 tracks that represent each month of the year. Jordana Moon’s vocal work is enveloping and melodic throughout, while Tom Aries’ synthesizer work lends riveting atmospherics and a sense of spacey nostalgia. The Western Canada-based Moon and Western Germany-based Aries formed the project in 2021, and have since flourished — releasing a nine-track concept album in both 2022 and 2023. TRANSCENDANCE is their latest success.
“Keep on moving,” Moon’s debonair vocals let out on “Traffic,” where late-night saxophones and moody synths converge beautifully. The refrain is aptly representative of the themes within the album — particularly reflecting on how moving into personal growth and transformation can be cathartic. “This transformation into a leveled-up version of yourself, gets to walk an exciting new path with golden opportunities,” the duo explain. Opening track “Firenight” is another success, embracing lush synths that complement the phoenix-based imagery of breaking through and breathing an invigorating fire, representative of personal transformation.
TRANSCENDENCE consistently impresses in its atmospheric, emotive brand of electro-pop — from the dark intrigue of “Knots,” whose production fondly reminds of Depeche Mode, and the stylish foreboding within “Don’T Feed the Demons.” The album is a thorough success from Moon and Aries.
