A stylish rock infectiousness persists throughout Eel Feeling, the full-length album from Chorley, UK-based band Hauspoints. The production impresses in a range of sounds, from the brass-laden exuberance of “Head To Toe” to the alternating dreamy/raucous appeal within the album’s title track. Consistently, a structurally dynamic rock sound takes hold, fond of infusing blaring doses of intensifying guitars and brassy accompaniments.
“Overall, the album’s loose concept is based on my car radio, which has a Bluetooth/FM transmitter to avoid commercial or mainstream analog radio stations,” says the band’s frontman, Palmo. “Because of the poor quality of the transmitter, random interference would regularly interrupt whatever I was listening to, hence the sporadic bursts of noise throughout the album.” The opening transmissions of “88.3 ONFM” certainly showcases that concept, and moves seamlessly into the previously featured gem “Hear No, See No.”
The album continues to unveil an exciting rock appeal thereafter. “Meat Bingo” channels an invigorating spoken-word feeling amidst thumping bass, reminiscent fondly of Art Brut, while “Catflap” infuses synth-touched intrigue alongside stream-of-conscious ruminations for what sounds like a cross between The Fall and LCD Soundsystem — in the best way possible. Talking Heads also show in the “always the same thing,” central hook. Overall, the release compels in its fusing of originally gripping songwriting with enjoyable doses of rock-friendly familiarity, resulting in a thorough success from Hauspoints.
