Emma Miller – “Downstairs”

/

“Downstairs” is a moving new track from Scottish artist Emma Miller, representing the final single from her upcoming Artifacts EP. Featuring production from Lucas Mendes and Dave Holden, “Downstairs” engages in its overall development — swelling from quaint piano-led lyrical apprehension into a satiating expanse, with added percussive pit-pattering alongside depictions of how fear can limit one’s capabilities.

“I don’t wanna go downstairs, because it’s lonely at the bottom,” Miller’s riveting vocals let out amidst patiently unveiling piano pulses. A fear of failure is conveyed with artful precision, emitting a ghostly engrossment into the “after dark,” subtle rhythmic ruminations. A synth-laden realization — “I thought that I could hold on,” — continues the atmospheric immersion. “Downstairs” delivers a solemn, introspective captivation throughout, showcasing Miller’s strong songwriting and stirring vocal presence.

The track is also featured in the genre-based, best-of Spotify compilation Emerging Indie Folk.
