Ancient History – “Never (Go Away)”

/

A captivating meshing of hazy distortion and serene guitar jangling, “Never (Go Away)” is a melodic new track from Ancient History. The project of Pittsburgh-based artist and musician Don Ducote, Ancient History grabbed our ears this past spring with the Zero Dollar Consolation Prize full-length; read our feature of that here. “Never (Go Away)” is amongst the album’s multitude of highlights, and is described as “a reflection on a past relationship and the introspection that follows its end.”

Playful synth tones and static-y percussive pushes resemble an initial blend of post-punk and industrial electronica; the soundscape presented is wholly riveting. Ducote’s vocals emerge with a yearning “to put the fire out,” — thematically representing a narrator who is coming to realize their role in a relationship’s break-up and general tumult. The twangy guitar additions in the final minute add wonderfully to the gripping atmospheric engrossment. “Never (Go Away)” succeeds in its aesthetical drive and thematic recollections of acknowledging past mistakes and shortcomings. Its release is paired with a trippy music video, streaming above.

This and other tracks featured this month can be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Emerging Singles’ Spotify playlist.

We discovered this release via MusoSoup, as part of the artist’s promotional campaign.
