Exuding an instrumental rock passion, Mt. Pilot is a commanding new album from Australian act The Finch Cycle. The project is the work of Bradley Murray, formerly the owner of Wireless Records, and also a previous member of the band Sunny Disposition. Post-rock and indie-rock inspirations collide on this exciting album, which is abundant in stellar guitar work and rhythmic backbones.
Opening the album with engrossing production, “Sarah Tone In” assembles quickly into a hazy wall of distortion and hypnotic percussive pit-pattering. Aggressive slabs of guitar intertwine with brass components past the three-minute turn, wholly invigorating. That aspect also impresses within “Neuro Backpack.” Trickling guitar jangles culminate into halted percussive flair, arriving in a brass-touched swell; the track enamors in its dynamics between reflective verses and the stylishly expansive liftoff.
Another highlight, “James Squared” gradually introduces layers of guitar in jumpily sporadic form, assembling with climactic fervency. The guitar work impresses throughout Mt. Pilot, and especially on a track like this, where moments of spaciousness and distortion-filled caressing enamor alike. “A Ticket For August” concludes the album with similarly paced guitar work, working with reflective percussive momentum for a thrilling rise into bluesy guitar twangs. Mt. Pilot is a gripping overall success from The Finch Cycle.
