syd sum – “Smile Wide”

/

Toronto-based artist syd sum shows a serene, emotively introspective pop sound on “Smile Wide,” which will be included on an upcoming EP. “Can you see me? Can you feel me?” dreamy vocals ask amidst twinkling keys and clanging, nocturnal bass. Vocals encourage to “smile wider,” amidst the ongoing tumult, moving back chillingly into the initial questioning — cementing the “imposter syndrome,” thematic hold that can result in one getting in the way of progress. “Smile Wide” is a lush, affecting piece of songwriting from syd sum.

syd sum elaborates further on the track:

“This song is about realizing that you’re truly the only one getting in your own way. The impostor syndrome, the constant comparisons we put ourselves through and the anxieties of growing up are something that’s always on my mind and this song was basically a way for me to say all you can do is smile wide and know that you’re the only one that is really standing your own way.”

This and other tracks featured this month can be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Emerging Singles’ Spotify playlist.
