Sour Blood – “The Devil”

/

A twinkling entrancement shows throughout “The Devil,” a new track from Sour Blood and his debut album, SUAS. A music video, from artist Hoss LeFleur, releases alongside the track — and beautifully captures its tonal dynamics, from water-set contemplation to more passionate flashes of excitement. Sour Blood — the project of Tipperary-born Kevin Gleeson — immerses throughout the album, and “The Devil” is an especially compelling display of his knack for swelling atmospheric and melodic intrigue.

Gentle keys clink and soothing orchestral components enter, and Gleeson’s enveloping vocal spaciousness emerges. The lyrics prove more ominous, as the music steps and the devil frolics on rooftops — and sends chills as Gleeson’s vocals assume a hazier tonal disposition and an overall textural effervescence escalates. “People holding hands, holding hands with the devil,” Gleeson continues, dazzling into an Animal Collective-esque push past the two-minute turn; the delightful psych-pop elements enamor throughout this track and the entirety of SUAS, which is an impressive achievement in atmospheric sound design.
