The sophomore full-length album from Orlando-based band Sentinel Events, Trendelenburg Dream shows a riveting rock sound propelled by guitar, dynamic keys, and visceral lyrical prowess. It’s a fantastic follow-up to last year’s album Poor Historian, featured in-depth here, and continues to showcase a sound rooted in artfully emotional conveyances. Shades of Placebo and Bright Eyes show, aesthetically.
“Silent Aspirations” commences the album with an intriguing yet approachably melodic sound, weaving twinkling piano, buzzing synths, and murmuring guitars amidst vocals — striving “not to choke in my sleep,” in conveyances of struggle. It’s an apt beginning to an album with a deep emotive core, revolving around themes of hospitalization; this opening track title references a medical term, described as “when a patient chokes on fluid-secretions while sleeping.” References to “first-degree burns and diminishing returns,” arrives into a gripping sequence, culminating in the gorgeous “know they can’t hear me,” laments.
The album’s highlights continue with consistency thereafter, ranging musically from the peppier twangs of “Fall Risk” to the piano-laden folk of “No Funeral” and angst-y rocker “Glass Psyche.” “I lost the fight, and I’m convinced that you’ll be the death of me,” the vocals let out on the latter, a particular standout with its piano infusions and multi-layered vocal immersion. Trendelenburg Dreams is a stirring success from Sentinel Events.
