Molombo – “Starstruck”

Congolese-American artist Molombo melds psych-rock and Afro-pop with stylish cohesion on new single “Starstruck.” Taking inspiration from Bob Dylan’s “Only a Pawn in Their Game,” the single enamors with its social commentary emphasis — set amidst an impressively eclectic sound, featuring an assortment of talented artists, among them “a Harlem guitarist, a Nigerian pianist and choir, a Cameroonian vocal chanter,” per the artist.

Twinkling guitar twangs provide an initial pulse and ongoing backing, tonally reflecting a nocturnal intrigue. Wordless vocal reflections and an expressive lead follow suit, as does clap-laden rhythmic charm; the momentum is palpable. “I’m going insane,” the vocals declare in gripping form as the guitars and rhythm section continue to rise fervently. A hip-hop vocal drive lets out there’s “no need to wait,” as guitars strut a serenely intoxicating immersion.

The final minute is especially impressive in its collective gathering of various layers, from the multiple vocal layers to the twanging guitar momentum and driving rhythms. “Starstruck” is an enjoyably intense and eclectic showcase from Molombo.

We discovered this release via MusoSoup, as part of the artist’s promotional campaign.
