Marina Vanoff – “Low”

/

Conjuring a confident alt-rock appeal, “Low” is a recent standout single from Los Angeles-based artist Marina Vanoff. “You got a tight grip on me like a chokehold,” the vocals admit alongside grimy distorted guitar pulsations. The lyrics convey a palpable yearning and desire, though for someone who already “has a girl,” and therefore crafts an unrequited situation. Pulsing, sporadic guitars past the two-minute turn continue the climactic, angst-y appeal — centered around the catching “it’s not cool,” central hook.

Invoking a no-frills ’90s rock nostalgia, “Low” has us fervently anticipating Vanoff’s upcoming debut album, Bones Baby, from which “Low” is the fourth single. Look for the album to drop in October. The track’s “never felt so alive,” admissions and chokehold-grip sentiments align with distorted guitars and debonair vocals for a compelling, replay-inducing production.

Vanoff elaborates further on the track:

“Writing ‘Low’ was an exploration into the complexity of human emotion and moral ambiguity. It’s about being so obsessed with someone that the moment you have the chance to be with them, you take it, because the idea of not knowing what could be is unbearable. I wanted to capture that feeling of irresistible attraction and the internal conflict it brings.”

This and other tracks featured this month can be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Emerging Singles’ Spotify playlist.
