Life On Thin Ice – ‘As Days Went By’ EP

Cyprus-based musician Kirill Yurchev and his Life On Thin Ice project shows a riveting instrumental sound on his newly released As Days Went By EP, an atmospheric treat that delves into electronic soundscapes and instrumental hip-hop inspirations. Citing ’90s Warp Records as a particular influence, Yurchev also notes ’70s American funk, ’80s punk, and the Other People record label as inspirations for the enjoyably dynamic sound on the EP, which is released via the Omninorm music label.

“Greenfield (On Fire)” is a stirring opener that beautifully captures the project’s tendency for gripping guitar and synth interplay. Chilly synths and steady percussion produce a haunting soundscape across the first half, giving way to trickling guitars at the mid-point — and culminating in a gripping combination of these various instrumental forces. “Brainstoppers” is another highlight, delving into an illuminated synth tonal direction within bustling rhythmic pit-pattering. Dreamy guitar work dazzles past the two-minute turn, again showcasing inventive and cohesive implementation. As Days Went By is an EP abundant in pleasing soundscapes and structural directions.

“Brainstoppers” and other tracks featured this month can be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Emerging Singles’ Spotify playlist.
