A gorgeously evolving track from Leonie Evans, “I Really Do” builds from a subdued pit-pattering into enveloping string arrangements and caressing vocal harmonies. “I want you to believe that you love me, I really do,” Evans’ riveting vocals let out, exuding a spine-tingling ascent upon the “when you go away,” melancholy — assuming a quivering vocal tone there as backing harmonies and string-laden expanses take hold alongside. Eerie piano injections and chilly omnichord add further to the soundscape, consistently compelling across both spacious moments and those featuring gripping vocal sequences.
“I Really Do” represents the first single from the Bristol-based artist’s Collaborations Volume 3. The first two volumes featured nearly 80 musicians and engineers altogether, and the upcoming volume will features 40 more. “The single is a collaboration that was created and recorded in one day,” Evans says. “And although i wrote the skeleton of the song about my struggles with romantic relationships and sexuality I gave the musicians free rein to play with it however they saw fit.” The result is consuming, creeping along with ample mystique and melodic personality.
