Boston-based band Happy Little Clouds impress with the track “Lungs,” representing their third single so far this year. A fully emotive success, despite lessening in tempo a bit from the prior two tracks, “Lungs” plays with cathartic effect — repeating “we are the way we are,” eventually attaining a confident sense of self-belief. Jac Mestel’s vocal presence is riveting, pairing throughout with enveloping guitars, rhythms, and organs.
“The listener can really make this song their own,” Mestel says. ”Each verse can be like someone grappling with a major life-shattering event as they go through a whole hero’s journey arc within the span of a 3-and-a-half minute song. As the song progresses, they deal with their constantly changing feelings or stages of grief around the happening and by the end, they work up the strength to believe in themselves.”
Pulsing guitar distortion, ardent vocals, and hazy organs assemble for an enveloping introduction. “And trying hold to back tears,” the vocals swelter, escalating feverishly into the “we are the way we are,” refrain and an ensuing reprisal of the introduction. A bass-heavy intrigue takes hold as the conclusion nears, admitting there “I never thought the light would come,” as the spacey organs and intensifying guitars conclude into that impactful, aforementioned refrain. “Lungs” is a powerful rock showcase from Happy Little Clouds.
