HAPPIE – ‘Real Love’ EP

Real Love is a moving new EP from HAPPIE, the project of singer/songwriter Happie Hoffman. Featuring a range of intimate folk and hooky pop across its four tracks, the release stirs in its overall range and emotional sincerity — thematically spanning from the undying bond of father-daughter on folk opener “Shooting Star” to the nocturnal pop ruminations of “Real Love.”

Tender acoustics and heart-aching guitar twangs compel on the opening “Shooting Star,” a success that laments “one day we’ll both be gone,” with contemplative, adoring qualities: “Your love taught me infinity.” Childhood reminisces, and the basking in the warm glow of a loving parent, is artfully conveyed. “So hold me tight, and hold me long,” the vocals exude, heightening into the “can’t buy more time,” realities — and emphasizing the make the most of time with your loved ones, since the moment is just “like a shooting star.”

“Close” builds on more sporadic guitar chiming. “I love you, but I don’t know who you are,” Happie sings, moving into reverbed percussion and wordless vocal chills; the ruminations on emotional closeness proves resonating, set amidst a serenely impactful production. EP finale “Easy” concludes with a triumphant declaration, featuring a chorus that proclaims “loving you is easy,” within a more expressive pop-forward stylistic direction.

The star-watching introspection of “Real Love” is especially impressive, flowing with ample mystique as suave guitars and ghostly vocals swell into a gripping “if it’s real love,” outpouring. This track is a particular standout, captivating in its infusion of haunting down-pitched vocals and eerie lead — referencing lucid dreams with eerily enveloping effect, as shuffling percussion and reflective backing vocals intertwine. “Real Love” is a striking showcase in atmosphere and emotional songwriting, which is evident throughout HAPPIE’s Real Love EP.
