First Umpire – “I’ll Wait”

/

Melding murky guitar tones with a post-punk rhythmic drive, “I’ll Wait” is a compelling new single from First Umpire. The Brooklyn-based project represents the work of Lebanese-American artist and producer Pat Cheiban, who is also guitarist in the band A Beacon School. Murmuring guitar tones complement a beckoning vocal presence — “sit down, I’ll wait, to hear the things you have to say,” — with bursting guitar layers arising upon the “corner of our mind,” line. The momentum throughout is palpable and stylishly interwoven.

Steady guitar strums past the one-minute turn develop into a peppy percussive complement and catching vocal sequence — “I’m out of mind, you’re out of line.” Squealing guitar dexterity is seamlessly conjured as “I’ll Wait” comes to a satiating close, representing a thoroughly melodic success from First Umpire.

Cheiban elaborates more on the track’s creative process and inspirations:

” “Going from the naive halls of a college dorm room to the cut-throat realities of the music industry was definitely a rough transition for me. It caused an intense shift in my personal relationships and really messed with my mental health. But through all of that, I felt like I was finding where I belonged. ‘I’m Here, I’ll Wait’ is a culmination of those oscillating emotions.”

“I’ll Wait” is one-half of First Umpire’s debut release, a double-sided single that also includes “I’m Here”:

This and other tracks featured this month can be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Emerging Singles’ Spotify playlist.
