Animal Prince – “Who You Are”

//

Mesmerizing with flourishes of strings and gripping vocal momentum, “Who You Are” is a standout art-pop single from Animal Prince. The Oakland-based project is led by singer/violinist Fae Nageon de Lestang and percussionist Grant McLeod.

The title-referencing vocal soaring and exuberant strings meld with a driving bass line for an aesthetic with timeless appeal, showing shades of Electric Light Orchestra in the charismatic orchestral components — and pairing with a captivating vocal presence from Fae Nageon de Lestang, parts Weyes Blood and Carole King.

A dreamily inviting sequence shows as the three-minute turn approaches, building climactically as the elegant strings assume a greater fervency amidst wordless vocal effects. “Who You Are” is a riveting showcase in songwriting and production from Animal Prince, whose eclectic art-pop sound proves ravishing. We’re excited for their upcoming record.

This and other tracks featured this month can be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Emerging Singles’ Spotify playlist.
