YANG – “Freedom Pill (Oakland)”

//

Oakland-based rock trio YANG impress on their new single “Freedom Pill (Oakland).” Melodic guitar work and reflective vocals conjure a ’90s nostalgia, complementing a relatable narrative about a couple of star-crossed lovers. The opposites-attract pairing — the insecure protagonist and “beautiful but troubled firebrand” Madison — project a passionate yet fragile relationship. “They could self-destroy, or take on the world,” the vocals let out at one point, aptly summarizing the relationship presented.

YANG himself is a singer/songwriter, and the current project has expanded into a trio with post-punk and alt-rock enjoyment. “In spite of everything I knew, which was next to nothing,” the introspective vocals emit, conveying smitten feelings, though also exercising caution. The melodic, nostalgic guitar-driven alt-rock sound intertwines with a compelling narrative for a surefire success from YANG. We’re excited to hear what’s next from the act.
