the next life – “you are”

//

The debut single from new project the next life, “you are” melds grungy guitar tones with spacey synth effects as vocals lament a blurry state between reality and fiction. Guitar strums and quaint synths build into a percussive impact, as the vocals weave into grimier guitar bursts — fondly reminiscent of Alex G. The range between lo-fi introspection and more raucous rock pursuits make for a consistently enveloping sound; we’re excited for whatever’s next from the next life.

“The lyrics are about struggling to discern what’s real and what’s fake, a sort of narrative told from the perspective of someone devolving into schizophrenia or psychosis,” the artist explains. “I think that while serious mental disorders like these are often tragic, they provide an invaluable opportunity to reflect on how fragile the fabric of reality is and how lucky we all are to live within a somewhat shared conception of the world around us.”

This and other tracks featured this month can be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Emerging Singles’ Spotify playlist.
