An effervescent hyperpop single from Montreal-based artist SUUNCAAT, “Salad Years” unveils with a glistening intrigue as hazy vocals, playful percussion, and twinkling synths seamlessly converge. “Salad Years” releases alongside a music video directed by Arlo Ed, whose baseball field setting fits well within themes of nostalgia and personal introspection. “I was generally unskilled and awkward and miserable, so I’d mostly sit on the bench,” she says of childhood experiences playing baseball. “I guess that’s how they make artists.”
Hazy, glimmering keys and playful percussive panting complement a stutter-y vocal momentum. Lyrical references to wishes further a sense of personal aspiration and reflection, diversifying well with more spoken-word vocal serenity that builds with sparkling appeal past the two-minute turn. A loopy, space-y synth infusion takes hold there as well, before settling into a satiating finale with bass rumbling, twinkling synths, and ceased rhythms. “Salad Years” is a fully engaging output from SUUNCAAT.
