Leeds-based quartet SISTERLY capture personal experiences within a riveting rock passion on their new 5-track EP, FLOWERMOUND. A sharp production complements momentum-filled structural builds, as the band presents themes “all about our cycles, journeys, parties & hangovers, self-loathing, love, hate, life and death.”
“So Right So Wrong” opens the EP with climactic charisma. Twinkling keys and soft guitar strums build into tender vocals, then launching into a confident “I’m leaving this party now,” vocal push; an anthemic spirit takes hold here, with whirring guitar distortion and panting percussion. Shades of The Libertines show in the vocal tone, enjoyably. “I am no one, you are just like me,” the vocals proclaim, building infectiously into the title-referencing refrain that concludes the production with vigor.
The EP’s subsequent four tracks continue the impressive production and songwriting. “Bud” invigorates with a bass-heavy intrigue and vocal swell exuding shades of Manic Street Preachers. Scathing references to “local politicians eating babies just for fun,” traverses into a blast of grungy guitar distortion, oozing with ’90s nostalgia. “Racing Snake” is another highlight with its “gonna come for you,” foreboding vocal refrain amidst sludgy guitars, while “Big Wheel” concludes the EP with a dazzling mixture of fervent rock and organ-touched introspection. SISTERLY thoroughly impress on this EP.
