Flying Needle – “Durham St.”

/

Bouncy piano and spacey synths converge on the gripping “Durham St.,” a new single from Philadelphia-based artist Flying Needle. The project represents the work of songwriter, producer, and performer Timothy Griffiths, who describes the release as “an upbeat but wistful gay love letter to my husband of fifteen years, Garen.” He continues: “It addresses a bittersweet truth about long-term relationships: even if you have been in love with someone for fifteen years, you may not always be able to open up to them completely.”

The lyrics capture peaceful evenings at home, getting stoned or spending time over beers, amidst introspective vulnerabilities like self-doubt and worries about the future — while emphasizing that they’ll always be alongside, for emotional support. The chirpy synths elements add seamlessly around mid-point, complementing Griffiths’ steadily melodic vocal flow. It’s a beautifully written track, and one that has us anticipating Flying Needle’s upcoming debut album, Bronze Age, out on October 4th.

This and other tracks featured this month can be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Emerging Singles’ Spotify playlist.
