Christopher Lock – ‘Ephemerist’

/

A dynamic electronic album with gripping atmospheric variation, Ephemerist represents the debut full-length of NYC-based musician and violist Christopher Lock. The artist’s eclectic musical background results in a riveting listening experience, one that spans widely — from the striking bass and viola interplay on “Lightlike,” to the industrial griminess of “Ornith,” and the serenely spacey effervescence of opening track “Epheme.” Gorgeous string arrangements and computer music sophistication intertwine with cohesive inventiveness.

After listening to the album, it’s of no surprise that Lock is also an active composer of film music; their innate ability to construct gripping soundscapes is perfectly suited for the medium. Additional mixing, mastering, and production on the release is by experimental composer and producer Joan Arnau Pàmies, who also runs the label Protomaterial Records. Ephemerist represents the label’s ninth release, and fits beautifully within a catalog that embraces atmospheric, experimental innovation; this is a fantastic, immersive release from Christopher Lock.

We discovered this release via MusoSoup, as part of the artist’s promotional campaign.
