Blacklight Beat Patrol – ‘Whispers from the Void’

Blacklight Beat Patrol unveils a creative mish-mash of genres on new album Whispers from the Void. Based in East Providence, RI, the group captivates with a dynamic electronic sound showing ample color, indebted to a variety of influences — from synthwave-laden soundscapes to glitch, breakbeat, and IDM pulsations.

Opening track “Juneau” converges various elements for a bustling intrigue. Neo-classical string infusions, hip-hop scratchiness, and electronic atmospherics combine for an inventive, delectably unsettling introduction to the project’s sound. “Dubious Decisions” follows with a spacey enigma; sporadic brass-y pulses mesmerize alongside ceaseless percussive energy to lead another gripping soundscape. It’s quickly evident that Whispers from the Void wholly embraces idiosyncratic atmospheric realms, in enjoyable form.

Another standout, “Un Hausse” weaves powerful synth arps and nonchalant vocal engrossment for a powerfully hypnotic pull. The range of instrumentation, from distorted clanging to dreamier nostalgia, is further exemplary of the project’s knack for dynamic tonal reaches. The glimmering effervesce of “Human Contact” appeals in more ethereal form, while “Last Quarter” dazzles in its more familiar electro-pop futuristic momentum. Whispers from the Void is a diverse, impactful success throughout from Blacklight Beat Patrol.

“Juneau” is also featured in the genre-based, best-of Spotify compilation Emerging Electronic.
