“When I’m Stronger” is a haunting new single from Bill Greenberg, succeeding here with his riveting vocal presence and acoustic guitar interactions. Harmonica flourishes emerge into the track’s conclusion, though largely it’s a showcase of Greenberg’s heartfelt lyricism and enjoyably intimate folk stylings. The NYC-based singer/songwriter first caught our attention last year with the single “Ukraine,” and continues to impress here with “When I’m Stronger.”
Morose, realistic portrayals of the human condition are conveyed with artful qualities in Greenberg’s songwriting. Lingering hope persists, though an honest account takes priority. The “maybe when I’m stronger,” vocal rise, conjuring shades of Neil Young, admits to paying the price “for staying with you,” — weighing excuses, second-guessing, and a myriad of other commonalities as we aspire toward something better. The harmonica addition provides a warming glow within the doses of grittiness. “When I’m Stronger” is a stellar piece of songwriting from Bill Greenberg.
