Infusing reggae-driven fusion with thematic catalysts for positive change, Mighty Joshua engages across the newly released album Dreaducation. Classic reggae familiarity melds with stylish implementations — from the brass-y fervency within “Live Here No More” to the exotic guitars/keys interplay on “Ethiopian Sunrise.” A number of talented collaborators appear as well — including saxophonist Plunky Branch, keyboardist Desi Hyson, and guitarists Ras Mel, DJ Williams, Junior Marvin, and Javo Grant Bassat.
The Richmond, Virginia-based Mighty Joshua consistently consumes throughout the album. Opening track “Beware” doesn’t waste any time with its evident charisma, as warm brassy tones and chilled-out vocal expressions assemble into a breezily melodic charm; it’s an excellent showcase of Mighty Joshua’s blend of traditional reggae with more creative idiosyncrasies. The album’s title track is another highlight, with its title-touting opening declaration delighting alongside guitar swipes and playful keys. Its “gather round,” enticement is further indication of the welcoming, approachable tone throughout Dreaducation, a surefire success from Mighty Joshua.
