Out of Runway is a riveting album from Worcester-based artist Jon of the Shred, channeling an instrumental rock sound with a myriad of cinematic, gaming, and musical influences. Specifically, the artist notes inspirations from “70s and 80s action and horror movies, 90s video game soundtracks and Gfunk, heavy metal, thrash metal, and prog rock.”
“Comms Down” opens the album with a radiant glistening. Effervescent keys and murky guitars build quickly into a feverishly eclectic charisma, culminating in an anthemic guitar soaring with a funky bass bolstering into the mid-point. The elegant, orchestral frolicking allures into the final, rock-forward minute. The album’s kickoff track is enjoyably exemplary of the artist’s tonally and aesthetically dynamic abilities.
Out of Runway continues with a consistent enthrallment from there. “Turbulence” follows with a mellower enticement, as a late-night swirl of piano and click-clacking percussion traverses into expressive guitars and twinkling keys. Elsewhere, “Brace for Impact” dazzles in its bouncy keys and brass-y chirps, showing ample charisma into the moodier rock arsenal in its conclusion. Out of Runway is a compellingly atmospheric success from Jon of the Shred.
