Boulder-based band Pool Sharks unveil an infectious psych-friendly punchiness across their eponymous album, showcasing a sound they self-describe as “shark rock” — wholly embracing fuzzy guitar immersion, bustling rhythmic fury, and charismatic lyrical wit. The project started to make waves in the Colorado psych scene in 2023, after being formed by Mexican American lead guitarist/singer Leo Treviño and drummer Ethan Minard. They were later joined by bassist Tyler Truscelli and guitarist Ted Stevens.
“Tardigrade” is an enthralling opener, whose dynamic range is reflective of the band’s creative psych-rock flurry. Sporadic vocal charm assume a debonair descension as buzzier guitar tones emerge, as the vocals declare “I am Tardigrade.” The spacey lyrical yearning meshes well with the timeless-sounding psychedelic appeal. “Hat Song” also enamors, though in a more soulful vocal vein — invigorating alongside fluid guitar licks that build into a dreamy intrigue approaching the five-minute turn.
From the relentlessly raucous rock fury of “Which Light” to the soulful spaciousness within “Hat Song,” Pool Sharks is a thoroughly captivating psych-rock success with dynamic appeal and notable creative charisma.
