Another hooky rocker from Subway Rat, “Delusional” continues the NYC-based artist’s stream of recent success, balancing a Strokes-esque rock immediacy with a more expressive vocal enamoring. 2023 saw two fantastic albums from the artist in Captain of the Football Team and Stand Clear of the Closing Doors, and 2024 seems poised to be another ascending year for Subway Rat.
Lyrical depictions of a “turbulent love story,” equivocating a deteriorating relationship with fighting bears in the woods — “and the delusional thinking of not letting go as the writing is clearly on the walls.” The “I thought,” beginning vocal sequences express a sense of disbelief, lamenting with infectious immersion as the reflective guitar progressions align melodically with the spirited vocal output. “Delusional” is another replay-inducer from Subway Rat.
