“Black Wig” is an enthralling track from UK-based artist Ren Harvieu. Ghostly vocal effects intertwine with a gorgeous orchestral glow, emitting a baroque-pop elegance with ample lyrical mystique — asking “do my secrets secretly make you sweat?” into string-laden pulses. The artist’s dynamic vocal range, from the whispered “wake up,” enticement to quivering theatrics, complements a riveting production with a magical orchestral array and atmospheric space-y touches. Wordless, ascending vocals and beautiful strings culminate in the “I am wearing a black wig,” declaration, capping off the track with strongly memorable impact.

The track was produced by Ren and Romeo Stodart — and it’s quite dazzling throughout, infusing “marxophones, harpsichords and musical saw,” alongside the gripping vocal presence. “I wonder what the point…” vocal sequence speaks palpably to the thematic engrossment, detailing a feeling out-of-place within a world of chaos. “If the void terrifies you, I’m sorry,” the vocals admit, with references to “the void,” lending a dark mystique that’s startled with dreamy immersion into the “wake up,” pushes. “Black Wig” is a stellar showcase in songwriting and production.

This and other tracks featured this month can be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Emerging Singles’ Spotify playlist.
