The debut album from Lisbon-based artist Greg Bounce, Brain Movies enamors with a melodic production that spans from jangly rock lushness to anthemic synth-pop expanses.
The stellar result lives up to the lofty potential established by gripping preceding singles “Friends in Town” and “Brain Movies,” both catching our ears last year. From the serene jangle-pop intrigue of “Fear That Love” to the colorful synth-laden spirit of opener “Because of You,” Brain Movies is a consistent display of the catching songwriting and production from Bounce, who moved from London to Lisbon in 2020.
Brain Movies is particularly impressive in its tonal range, impressing in both tender balladry in the vein of “Goldcrest” — whose “travel by moonlight,” chorus lends a heartrending resonance — to the funky pop charisma of “Find a Love,” whose brisk rhythms and soaring vocal exuberance combine for an addictive energy. “The Door” sits enjoyably in the middle, showing both piano-forward introspection with haunting multi-vocal escalations. A multitude of memorable moments show throughout Greg Bounce’s compelling new album Brain Movies.
