Are We Hunting – “Jail Calls”

/

Northern California-based singer/songwriter Are We Hunting resonates on new single “Jail Calls,” conjuring a blend of The Replacements and The War on Drugs in its twangy guitar work and melodic vocal outpouring. Described as a “post west coast memoir,” the track excels with its driving rock allure, showcasing the engaging songwriting of Ryan Ayala.

“I’m singing a song ’cause it’s all I got,” the vocals shrug amidst flickering guitar jangles, asking “can’t you hear me crying?” into a melancholic “moving on,” admittance. A wordless vocal soaring enamors approaching the two-minute turn, lending an atmospheric engrossment amidst a lush synth-touched undercurrent. Lyrics also stir in their presentation of a distant father figure — coming across as caring while in jail, and refusing to give even a thought when released. “Jail Calls” is a melodic, intimate success from Are We Hunting.

This and other tracks featured this month can be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Emerging Singles’ Spotify playlist.
