San Francisco-based artist Hana Freed fronts the creative electronic project Tricky FM, presenting an intoxicatingly melodic intrigue throughout new album Peace, Love, Unity, Rave. Ranging from the hyper-pop effervescence of the brisk “Love Redux” to the hypnotic late-night throbs of “See Me Play,” the album’s production enamors in its eclectic range and constant sense of enjoyable unpredictability.
The opening “Griefwork” traverses from dreamy, contemplative synth pulses into a trip-hop percussive feeling; the gripping soundscape and knack for evolving structural satiation is palpable. Another highlight comes in the form of “Strawberry Coughdrop,” exuding a warming, psychedelic appeal in the cut-up vocal samples and lush vocal emergence. More dexterous percussive impact arrives thereafter as the vocals maintain their serenely hypnotic grip.
“First Kiss” also compels with its nocturnal, textural development into flickering brightness and dream-pop enticement. Peace, Love, Unity, Rave is an accomplishment in darkly atmospheric spells and lushly melodic captivation.
